Help out the NIEP! It is important to accelerate new firm creation in Prince George and Northern BC
The Northern Innovation and Entrepreneurship Partnership (NIEP) will support innovation, new firm creation and business growth in order to positively impact the rate of entrepreneurship in Prince George and Northern BC.
The partnership will also leverage UNBC and CNC by linking research with businesses willing and able to commercialize ideas.
Help us bring more Northern ideas to market by voting for this great idea!
52 votesThis sounds like an great partnership. I am conducting due diligence calls with 6-8 different entrepreneurs in the prince george region. But, please let us know if you have any feedback. We’re listening to everyone who cares about Prince George innovation and wants to give us advice about how to effectively deploy funds that will help companies. I plan to make a final decision by Jun 27th.

Create a Technology Ecosystem map
The Tech ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs and innovators is quite robust but not easily understood. GIS tools can map and guide people through the ecosystem.

Maintain a directory of startups in BC
Like CrunchBase but for BC startups. Include an option for them to say what they are looking for help with, if they are funded, opportunities, etc..
12 votesThanks Nik. This is a project underway. Internally code-named “Louie” People will be able to create profiles for their companies, and optionally make them public. I love the idea of adding what they are looking for – ie Mentors, Funding, etc – we will add that to the spec for sure.

expand BCIC's mandate to include attracting large tech companies to set up shop here.
Because it's buzzwordy we spend a lot of time talking about incubators as the best way to mentor companies. It's true that there are some exceptionally successful tech incubators out there, but the jury is still far from in on whether the model itself is a good one. In fact, successful incubators are substantially in the minority.
Surely there must have been something else before tech incubators, right?
YES! It was BIG successful companies. They hire people young, teach them business process and give structure to their knowledge and skills, and then spit them out (generally wealthier and smarter) when…

create a podcast featuring BC innovators
A directory of startups could be further enhanced by a weekly/bi-weekly interview podcast. Imagine looking at the list of startups/innovators, and being able to click and download an podcast to learn how they got where they are. A great learning resource for new entrepreneurs, and a great opportunity for BCIC.

I want to build a mobile app
What software should I build Front end in?
What software should I build back end in?

Great idea Steve. We have learned a lot so far in the past two months of the beta. We have started iterating by creating different forums per stage. But the additional metadata that you are suggestion will not only help us understand how the idea fits in, but will help set everyone’s expectations too. We are getting started on this ASAP and will keep this thread posted with updates

partner with international orgs to raise awareness
Partnering with BCIC counterparts overseas, particularly in tech hubs like SF, Chicago, etc is a way to gain insight and a different perspective, as well as raise awareness of BCIC internationally.

Help list and find the great local meetup communities
There are so many great things going on but they are hard to find unless you hunt meetup and twitter, not just event calendar but a place to list ( fullindie, van soc games, net tuesday, and so many many more ) great groups with their own communities that often don't know of each other.

Seamless integration of BCIC mentor program with regional tech mentoring programs (e.g KASTmba)
KASTmba is an example of a well developed successful mentor program that can complement & integrate with BCIC new program model. Some development of this would be high value
